At what point do you say to yourself, “I need help”? And how many times do you say it before you actually reach out? Do you wait to hang by a single thread? Or do you wait for that last thread to start tearing before someone else tells you to grab on for dear life because you’ll end up at the bottom, dead?

In the first episode of this 2-part post on survival tactics, I went over a few things that I do to minimize the daily miseries of ADD. Today’s focus is on strategies for bipolar disorder, which is somewhat more tricky because the symptoms are more diverse and unpredictable.
Unlike ADD, which is a disorder that I literally struggle with every day, bipolar is something that comes and goes for me. It’s an issue much of the time, but not all of the time, so it’s harder to feel adequately prepared. Continue reading
But life goes on, and on, and on, regardless of how I’m feeling from one day to the next. Some days are pretty darn good, others, not so much. Over the last 30 years, however, I’ve come up with some strategies that help me get by. Mental illness often presents us with a mental chaos. Panic disorders disrupt the everyday flow of life with high anxiety; generalized anxiety disorders present falsities about what we should be afraid of. Bipolar disorder with the disorder of moods, and schizophrenia and psychotic symptoms generously give false beliefs. All of the above in some way disorganize the mind as well as everyday life, and it is often the chore of reigning it back in that helps in the battle against these disorders.
