About Canvas

perfect (c) - fb page - CopyA Canvas Of The Minds was born with the express purpose of discussing mental health, of raising awareness every day, in the best way that we knew how: through the voices of many individuals dealing with mental illness. Two of us (Ruby and Lulu)  had an idea we thought was good, and happily it turned out that quite a few others thought it was, too.  Through the efforts, thoughts, and contributions of all the incredible people who have consented to write with us; along with the amazing support of you who have read, liked, commented, subscribed, and encouraged us in ways too numerous to list, we are doing all we can to make every day a day of mental health awareness and education.

This project is comprised of a very diverse stable of authors who are committed to writing for our site while maintaining their own individual blogs. We are happy to be forever growing, adding voices as well as more extensive resources to help anyone dealing with mental illness, in themselves or in someone whom they love, or who simply want to have a greater understanding of what living with mental illness is truly like.

In 2013 we were proud and excited to launch the Blog For Mental Health campaign. The brainchild of one of our co-founders, Lulu, started through her site in 2012, this yearly initiative invites all bloggers from every walk of life to make a commitment to speak freely and bravely about the ways in which mental illness has touched their lives. The response has been overwhelming, as have been the emotional and enlightening stories people have shared with us.

We have come a long way in our fight against stigma and in our desire to educate people about what having a mental illness really means, but there is so much more yet to do. We will not rest until the last of the myths, misconceptions, and fears born of ignorance are replaced with truth, understanding, and acceptance.

Of course most of all, we want those struggling with mental illness to know they are not alone, that it is a fight which can be won, and that we are here to help support you in your journey to wellness — and also to lend support to anyone trying to understand what life with mental illness entails.

Your thoughts and insights are of value to us. Your unique ideas and experiences are of value to us. You are of value to us, and we hope you find value here in what we share of ourselves.

  1. Hi Ruby,
    I don’t know… are you Christian?
I’m looking for Christian testimonies to put on a special place on my blog. If you’re Christian do you have a written testimony you would be willing to share?
    thank you,
    robin claire

    • Hello Robin. I am a christian, lower case “c”, in the way I behave towards and treat my fellow beings; but I am not a Christian, upper case “C”, as in the evangelical religion. I wish you much luck with your project.

  2. You already known I’m behind this lovely endeavor of yours, but I want to spread the light to others, too, so I’ve nominated A Canvas of the Minds for The Sunshine Award. Please visit http://wp.me/p27R0K-cC for more info. Thank you for all you write, share, do!

  3. Hi, Ruby and Lulu! Thanks so much for what you’re doing — mental health support and awareness is such an important, underrated cause! There are various types of mental illnesses I am unfamiliar with (and my be misinformed about), and I look forward to learning from this community. I’ve have struggled with various degrees of depression; I would describe my last, most severe experience with it as being trapped in a vortex of mind games, lies, and self-loath. I can’t be more thankful for people who sought to TRULY understand what I was going through. (P.S. I just started blogging about mental health, life, and faith a while back.)
